Improve Your Vision with Lenses Made for You

At Eastern Shore Eye Care, we don’t believe your lenses should be an afterthought. We take a different approach to selecting lenses for your chosen frames. Every pair of glasses we make can be built around how you actually use your eyes, whether that means adjusting for hours at a computer, time behind the wheel at night, or a life split between reading and the outdoors.

That’s the idea behind personalized and customized lenses: vision correction that’s designed for you, not just your prescription.

Customized vs. Personalized Lenses: What’s the Difference?

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same thing.

Customized LensesPersonalized Lenses
What it isA set of pre-configured lens designs built around common lifestylesA fully individualized lens built from your own answers about how you see and live
How it worksChoose from a small number of preset options (for example, an “adventure,” “modern,” or “detailed” design)Complete a short questionnaire about your visual habits and preferences, then we fine-tune the lens to match
Best forPatients who want a quick upgrade over a standard lensPatients who want the most precise, tailored fit possible

Both options go beyond a standard, off-the-shelf lens. The right choice comes down to how specific you want your lenses to be — and we’ll help you decide during your visit.

How the Personalization Process Works

Getting personalized lenses is simple, and it starts with a conversation.

  1. We start with your eye exam. Your prescription and overall eye health are the foundation for everything that follows.
  2. You’ll complete a short lifestyle questionnaire. This two-page form, hosted on Hoya’s website, asks about your daily habits: how much time you spend reading versus driving, working at a computer, or switching between near and far tasks.
  3. We fine-tune your lens parameters. Using your answers, we can adjust details like:
    • Corridor length: the zone of a progressive lens dedicated to close-up vision. A shorter corridor suits people who do a lot of near work, while a longer corridor benefits those who spend most of their time focused at a distance, like those who work outdoors.
    • Soft focus and blur placement: rather than simply eliminating blur at the edges of a progressive lens, we can control where that softening happens based on how you move your eyes throughout the day.
  4. Your lenses are made to that exact profile. No two personalized lenses are built quite the same way.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Personalized Lenses?

Personalized lenses tend to make the biggest difference for patients who:

  • Multitask between near and far vision throughout the day
  • Spend long hours on a computer or other digital devices
  • Are mostly distance wearers, including frequent sunglass wearers
  • Have tried progressive lenses before and found them uncomfortable or hard to adjust to
  • Drive frequently, especially at night
  • Want the most precise, individualized fit available, not just a preset option

Not sure which lens category is right for you? That’s exactly what your consultation is for.

Additional Ways to Personalize Your Lenses

Personalization doesn’t stop at your everyday pair. We also offer:

  • Nighttime driving lenses: a dedicated pair designed to improve visual clarity and reduce glare from oncoming headlights after dark.
  • Computer and digital eye strain lenses: built with a power boost for more comfortable, focused vision at intermediate distances.

Lens Brands and Materials We Work With

Hoya is the lens design brand we work with for personalized and customized lenses, offering some of the most advanced tools available for tailoring a lens to your exact needs.

You may also hear about Trivex. This is a lens material, not a design, similar to polycarbonate. Trivex can be paired with Hoya lens designs, so it works alongside your lens design rather than competing with it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Personalized and Customized Lenses

What’s the difference between personalized and customized lenses?

Customized lenses are built from a small set of preset lifestyle designs, while personalized lenses are individually fine-tuned based on a detailed questionnaire and consultation about your specific visual habits and needs.

For many patients, yes, especially those with demanding visual needs, like frequent computer use, night driving, or a lifestyle that shifts constantly between near and far tasks. Personalized lenses are designed to reduce the adjustment period and improve comfort compared to standard lenses.

Corridor length refers to the portion of a progressive lens dedicated to near vision. A shorter corridor benefits people who do a lot of close-up work, while a longer corridor suits those who spend most of their time focused at a distance.

You’ll need a valid, current prescription. If your prescription is out of date, we can take care of that with an eye exam.

We offer dedicated nighttime driving lenses designed to reduce glare and improve visual clarity in low-light conditions, in addition to our personalized and customized lens options.

Personalized lenses typically take approximately 10 business days to be made.
